Abstract
It is essential to determine the normal value of acoustic rhinometry for evaluating the therapeutic results of operations and the degree of the nasal obstruction. Some data were presented about the normal value of the nose assessed by acoustic
rhinometry. But the normal values of each age group is not standardized in Koreans and the difference in both sexes is not defined.
Between August 1993 and February 1994, Seventy male and seventy female Korean volunteers were assessed using acoustic rhinometer at department of otorhinolaryngology, Sanggye Paik Hospital. All had no evidence of nasal problem and showed normal
nasal
finding. All devided into 7 groups by decade. So each group has 10 males or females in same decade. The range of age was from 4 to 69 years old. The assessed parameters were the location and the area of the first notch (isthmus notch) and the
second
notch (conchal notch), the area of 4cm from nostril (CA4.0) and the volume of the nasal cavity.
@ES The results were as followings:
@EN 1) Between both sides of nasal cavity in each age group, there were no statistically significant difference.
2) Comparing the location and the area of the first notch, the location and the area of the second notch and the nasal volume of both sexes in each age group, there were no statistical significance below third decade.
3) The area of the first notch ad the second notch of both sexes, the CA4.0 of females and the volume of the nasal cavity of both sexes increased significantly with increase of age. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:5, 1995)
